City Brief
Guilin
Guilin Overview

One of the most-visited Chinese cities, Guilin , located in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has long been famous for its limestone karst hills. Formed more than 200 million years ago when the oceans receded from this area, the towers sprout from a patchwork of paddy fields and flowing streams, creating a dreamy, seductive landscape that leaves few souls unstirred. Time and space meet here to produce a masterpiece of nature's handiwork. Though there are a few hills in the city that can be explored, and the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo remains one of top river journeys in the world, Guilin is also being used as a base to visit the Yao, Miao, and Dong minority villages to the northwest. Unfortunately, the cost of Guilin's overwhelming popularity is a degree of unrelenting exploitation and extortion audacious even by Chinese standards; foreigners are overcharged for everything.

Lijiang River
Lijiang River

Lijiang River is located in the area of Zhuang minority Autonomous Region, Guangxi province. It is considered as the most beautiful and particular water area of Chinese landscapes. On both sides of the wandering more than 100-kilometer-long river, there are stretching peaks with different oulines, the largest-scale and the most beautiful karst landform in the world, and the typical local foldway which combine to create a natural Chinese landscape painting. For thousands of years, Lijiang River is wee-known for its water and mountains.

Yangshuo Moon Mountain
Yangshuo Moon Mountain

The highway from Guilin turns southward at Yangshuo and after a couple of kilometer crosses the Jingbao River. South of this river and just to the west of the highway is a limestone pinnacle with a moon-shaped hole penetrating the hill. Hence the name Moon Hill. With an elevation of 380 meters, the hill is 230 meters in relative height and 410 meters in length.

Over 800 marble stairs leading to the cave were completed in 1981, giving convenience to those who want to get a close view of the cave. The cave is about 50 meters in height and width, shaping like a semicircular archway. In sunny day, blue sky and white clouds can be see through the cave and in cloudy and rainy day, the "moon" is deep in mist.

Reed Flute Cave

With its location five kilometers northwest of the downtown of Guilin, the Reed Flute Cave is a brilliant cave marked on almost all travel itineraries. The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside it, with which people make flutes. Inside this water-eroded cave is a spectacular world of various stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations created by carbonate deposition. Illuminated by colored lighting, the fantastic spectacle is found in many variations along this 240-meter-long cave. Walking through the serried stone pillars, tourists feast their eyes on changing spots, feeling they are in a paradise where the Gods live.
