Towering peaks of bizarre shaped limestone, some as high as a six-story building, cover a sprawling area of over 26,000 hectares. Shilin was created by the erosive effect of water when the area was submerged some 270 million years ago.

A full day’s trip to Yunnan Provincial Museum, Examination rooms in feudal China which located in beautiful Yunnan Provincial University and Green Lake Park, which is one of the most picturesque parks in downtown Kunming. In every winter, huge flocks of red-beaked gulls migrate here from Siberia. Around the park, there are also many excellent bars and restaurants.

Morning transfer to Lijiang. Lijiang is the base of the Naxi minority nationality. The Naxi are descended from Tibetan nomads and lived until recently in a matriarchal society. Women still seem to run the show. Certainly in the old part of Lijiang.

Afternoon trip to the Black Dragon Pool, Lijiang Museum, Old City and The Mansion of Mu Clan which provide a fascinating insight into the local culture and traditions of Lijiang. When the clan chief moved his original residence here, the clan became the most powerful and prestigious in the region, reaching a climax during the collapse of the Ming Dynasty.
